linguistics revisited
How I knew that I'd discovered my new favorite book without even reading past the first page:"Either this will ring bells for you, or it won't. A printed banner has appeared on the concourse of a petrol station near to where I live. 'Come inside,' it says, 'for CD's, VIDEO's, DVD's, and BOOK's.' If this satanic sprinkling of redundant apostrophes causes no little gasp of horror or quickening of the pulse, you should probably put down this book at once."
Not on your life! I will instead read on with vigor and zeal. Finally, a book treating the love of grammar with the dignity and glamour that it deserves. Brilliant. Not since Speed Scrabble became trendy have I been so delighted to be a word-lover.
(If anyone cares: the book is "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by the very British Lynne Truss.)
