happy valentine's.

It all started eight years ago, when I first moved in with Ash. Since we didn't have a T.V. at that first apartment (nor the wonders of hulu.com, wireless internet, or any of those modern marvels... now that I'm thinking about it, how, really did we live?!), we had to have our in-home entertainment shipped in. Literally. Kell and I had a small collection of our favorite movies, but Ash - dear, sweet, movie-loving Ash - had quite the collection. And among her favorites was... get ready for this... Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes. You heard right, folks.

When she first brought out the DVDs, I admit that - like any self-respecting 22-year old would - I judged her and her Vampire-loving. But, because you are reading my blog, and because I feel like you deserve my utmost and unswerving honesty, I'll tell you the truth. I watched it. But it's only because I had no other option. (Do you remember what life was like without wireless internet?)

Well, because Valentine's Day is upon us, Ash thought that it would only be appropriate to self-medicate with a dose of teen angst. (Because, really, we don't have enough angst in our own adult lives. We must import it from thirteen-year-olds.) Enter: Twilight. Yes, once again, we're back to the vampires. Which I only find appropriate for Valentine's Day.
To be sure, it has been a very educational venture. Surprisingly enough, after watching at least half-a-season of Buffy, it appears that I actually learned nothing about vampires. And so Ash has taken it upon herself to educate me. Here is what I've learned so far...
  • Vampires are dead. Meaning, not alive. Also referred to as "undead" or "immortal". Which, for the life of me, I still don't understand how a dead person can die. As Vampires do. When they don't get enough bloooood.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Vampires don't always have fangs. Nor do they always speak with Russian accents.
  • Vampires don't get cold. Or hot. Something about wanting to cut down on the electric bill.
  • Vampires are more pasty-white than I am. Truly impressive.
  • To kill a Vampire, another Vampire must tear his head off. Then he must be torn from limb to limb. And then burned. No wonder this series is so popular with the teenagers.
  • Vampires say deep things like: "If we weren't natural enemies, and you weren't trying to steal my reason for existing, I might like you."
And so there you have it. A whole nether-world of knowledge. And right in time for a much needed dose of angst.
